Celtic Faces Tough Decision on Alexandro Bernabei’s Future

Internacional’s hopes of retaining Alexandro Bernabei seem to be fading as financial constraints take center stage. The Celtic defender’s loan spell in Brazil was nothing short of remarkable. Regular game time and stellar performances earned him the title of the best left-back in Brazilian football, while his contributions helped Internacional climb the league standings. However, the economics of modern football may put a permanent deal out of reach for the Brazilian club.

Celtic’s £3.5 million investment in Bernabei back in 2022 has paid off in terms of player development. While another loan spell at Internacional might benefit his growth, Celtic now faces a lucrative opportunity to cash in on their rising star. Reports suggest that the Scottish champions are weighing their options, with Bernabei’s market value likely attracting suitors from both South America and Europe, particularly Italy, where he holds a passport.

Internacional’s vice president, Jose Bisol, recently acknowledged the club’s limitations in negotiating a deal. Speaking to the press, he noted, “Alexandro Bernabei has settled well here and wants to stay, but we must act responsibly within our financial limits. The decision ultimately lies with Celtic, and we hope for a positive resolution.” Despite the mutual interest, the financial gap remains a significant hurdle.

For Celtic, Bernabei’s future in Glasgow appears uncertain. Even if he returns to Scotland in January, he will face stiff competition from Greg Taylor and Alex Valle for the left-back position. Additionally, rumors of Kieran Tierney’s potential return to Celtic Park—either on loan or permanently—further complicate the scenario for Bernabei.

As the January transfer window approaches, Celtic’s management will need to carefully evaluate their options. Whether they choose to capitalize on Bernabei’s success or retain him for another season, the decision will undoubtedly shape the next phase of the young defender’s promising career.
