‘I worked for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – and was shocked with how they greeted me’Prince Archie’s former nanny has shared what it was like when she first met the couple at their Windsor home.Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may once have been senior working royals, however behind-closed-doors it appears they were always very casual and ordinary.
After the birth of their first child, Prince Archie, in 2019, the couple was quick to find a nanny to help look after their son, especially when they were on royal engagements together.It didn’t take long for Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, to employ Lorren Khumalo, a paediatric nurse and consultant, who first met the couple at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
Lorren said that she was surprised to see Prince Harry walking around barefoot on their first meeting, with the prince immediately putting his arms out to hug her.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club with Zenzele Ndebele, Lorren said: “I thought to myself, ‘I wonder how their nannies look, do they wear heels?’ Prince William has got a Norland Nanny, so they’ve got a brown uniform that for my skin colour and the way it looks in khaki brown, I knew it wouldn’t even go, it would just not work.”
She continued: “So [I thought] I’ll wear something dark and nice kitten heels but I’ll look presentable for a royal so I need to do my best. But I didn’t use any make-up, I said if they take me, they take me as I am.”I wasn’t born with a silver spoon, I’m not blue blood, I will go as I am and trust me with my God, I’ll get this job.”
While she expected to see Harry in an expensive suit, she said the duke was instead in jeans and a t-shirt.She recalled: “When I got there, the way he opened his arms ‘Hello Lorren!’ and gave me a hug. [I thought] ‘Wow, what a gentleman, what a gem’, oh my goodness, I couldn’t believe it.
“And when I walked in and saw Meghan I thought ‘My God, what a beautiful woman’. I just felt so comfortable, it wasn’t as formal as I expected it to be, it was just a normal home.”Lorren is also a fan of Harry and Meghan, and it seems the couple is very fond of her.
Talking on the Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan in 2020, Meghan said: “She didn’t just take care of Archie she took care of us, she definitely took care of me.”
Harry and Meghan quit royal life in 2020 and moved overseas to Montecito, where it is believed they have another nanny to help them care for Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
