Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher openly criticized Verstappen’s decision to take part in the high-speed event so soon after the Miami Grand Prix and the birth of his daughter. Schumacher questioned the judgment behind choosing the notoriously dangerous Nordschleife track for such an endeavor.
Schumacher voiced his concerns during a discussion on Backstage Boxengasse, suggesting that if he were a team principal, he would have confronted Verstappen about his mental clarity, hinting that the decision lacked caution given the risks involved.
He emphasized the hazards associated with the Nordschleife, calling it an exceptionally dangerous circuit due to its speed and difficulty. Schumacher noted that many overlook just how perilous it is, especially for top-tier drivers pushing the limits.
HBAgency
While Verstappen’s performance impressed some—most notably fellow ex-driver Timo Glock—Schumacher warned that things can go wrong very quickly on such tracks. Despite reports of a 7-minute 53-second lap time, there’s no official confirmation of the timing.
Drawing on past events, Schumacher recalled when DTM (German touring cars) stopped racing at the Nordschleife due to safety concerns. He pointed out that modern GT3 cars are just as fast and unforgiving, making the track no less dangerous today.
Glock had praised Verstappen for his confident handling and composure, particularly given how early he displayed pace during the run. However, Schumacher’s stance contrasted this optimism, favoring safety over spectacle in such circumstances.
Ultimately, while Verstappen’s bold drive may have wowed some, it reignited the debate about safety in motorsport and the risks drivers take. For Schumacher, the Nordschleife remains a proving ground best approached with caution, not bravado.
