The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) responded to a series of critical incidents on Saturday, May 17, that left one man dead and two others injured in Campbell County. The day proved to be especially demanding for emergency responders, as they were called to three separate accidents involving both watercraft and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) within the span of just over an hour. These events highlight the risks that come with recreational activities on both land and water, and they serve as a somber reminder of the importance of safety precautions.
The most devastating of the three incidents occurred on Norris Lake, where a 75-year-old man tragically fell from a boat near a private dock. The accident was reported at 5:49 p.m., and although bystanders and emergency personnel attempted CPR on the scene, the man could not be revived. He was later pronounced dead at the Campbell County Medical Center. This marks the eighth boating-related fatality investigated by TWRA in 2025—a figure that underscores the ongoing need for awareness and vigilance while out on the water.
Earlier that same evening, at approximately 5:45 p.m., TWRA officers responded to the Red Ash area for an OHV crash involving a side-by-side vehicle. The crash occurred as the vehicle was being loaded onto a trailer when it rolled down an embankment, trapping the driver underneath. The driver sustained injuries but was fortunate enough to avoid life-threatening harm. They were airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further treatment, highlighting the fast and efficient response of the local emergency teams.
Just an hour later, at 6:45 p.m., a second off-road crash took place on Tower Road in the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. In this instance, a four-wheeler veered off its trail and collided with rocky terrain, leaving the rider unconscious. Emergency responders, including TWRA and local EMS units, quickly located the individual and arranged for air transport to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Fortunately, the rider is expected to make a full recovery.
Authorities expressed appreciation for the LaFollette Rescue Squad and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, whose assistance was crucial in managing these emergencies. These incidents serve as a powerful call to action for outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety. Whether enjoying a day on the lake or navigating off-road trails, following proper safety protocols and staying alert can make the difference between a great day outdoors and a tragic one.
