Celtic and Rangers have agreed to reintroduce away fan allocations for their matches, aiming to enhance the atmosphere of the Old Firm derbies. This decision follows a period during which away supporters were absent due to safety concerns and disputes over ticket allocations.
Historically, both clubs provided substantial ticket allocations to visiting fans. However, in 2018, Rangers reduced Celtic’s allocation at Ibrox Stadium, prompting Celtic to reciprocate at Celtic Park. This led to a significant reduction in away fan presence, impacting the traditional derby atmosphere.
In March 2024, both clubs, in collaboration with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), agreed to restore away fan allocations to approximately 5% of stadium capacity. This would mean around 3,000 tickets for visiting supporters at each venue. However, due to ongoing safety concerns and necessary stadium modifications, the implementation of this agreement was delayed.
Celtic initiated safety measures, including installing temporary netting and fencing, to accommodate away fans securely. Rangers faced delays in completing similar renovations at Ibrox, leading to further postponements. Consequently, the first two derbies of the 2024/2025 season proceeded without away supporters.
Despite these challenges, both clubs have reaffirmed their commitment to reintroducing away fans. The SPFL has emphasized the importance of away supporters in enhancing the passion and excitement of the Premiership. The league has confirmed that, subject to the completion of necessary safety requirements at both stadiums, away fan allocations will be reinstated for subsequent matches.
This development is anticipated to restore the vibrant atmosphere characteristic of Old Firm derbies, with both sets of supporters contributing to the spectacle. Fans eagerly await the return of these historic fixtures, enriched by the presence of rival supporters, which adds to the intensity and tradition of Scottish football’s most renowned rivalry.
