Mum’s warning after ‘barely there’ change on fingernail turned out to be terminal cancer that spread to her brain

…he was exposed to asbestos. Decades later, in April 2023, Malcolm noticed a persistent, subtle discomfort in his chest. Initially, he brushed it off, believing it was related to aging or minor respiratory issues. “It was just a slight, nagging tightness,” he explained. “Nothing that made me feel particularly unwell, but it lingered.”

After weeks without improvement, Malcolm decided to see his GP. Tests, including a chest X-ray and CT scan, revealed the devastating diagnosis: mesothelioma. “I was shocked,” Malcolm said. “I never thought something so subtle could lead to this. If I’d ignored it, who knows how much worse it could have been?”

Malcolm underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to manage the condition and improve his quality of life. Though the cancer is incurable, he emphasizes the importance of early detection. “If you have any inkling that something is wrong, go to your GP,” he urged. “Don’t wait for it to get worse. A small sign could mean something bigger.”

Now raising awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos exposure, Malcolm hopes his story will encourage others to seek help if they notice persistent, unusual symptoms.
